DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) vs Lacquer. Which should you choose?

DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) vs Lacquer. Which should you choose?

DMM (Direct Metal Mastering) became popular during the 80’s but was soon less favourable as more cutting engineers went back to lacquer. It was co-developed by Neumann and Teldec, and instead of engraving the groove into a soft metal lacquer-coated aluminum disc, a DMM lathe engraves the audio signal directly onto a hard metal copper-plated master disc. The difference between a DMM cut and a lacquer cut is that the DMM is more precise, with sharper transients and better image “edge…

Roll The Dice – Until Silence – The Leaf Label (BAY89)

Roll The Dice – Until Silence – The Leaf Label (BAY89)

Here at Well Tempered we’re very proud to be manufacturing for The Leaf Label. Until Silence marks a monumental shift for Roll The Dice, in both sonics and psychogeography. The characteristic framework of piano and synthesiser is reinforced with a newly conscripted string section: dramatic arrangements grind against furnace blasts of static, and phases of unrelenting rhythmic intensity collapse into moments of frayed, fragile beauty. Roll The Dice’s most powerful and nuanced work to date, its tracks are by turns…

Heavyweight 180g Vinyl

Heavyweight 180g Vinyl

It is often thought by many that a record pressed onto Heavyweight 180g Vinyl produces a better sounding product.  This is certainly not the case. Some think that a Heavyweight 180g Vinyl 12″ for example would have a lower noise floor than a standard 140g, it doesn’t. Others think that a 180g 12″ has deeper grooves than a standard weight 12″, this is simply not true. Whether you have your record pressed on standard weight vinyl or heavyweight, the pressing will use…

Laser Etched Vinyl Records

Laser Etched Vinyl Records

With the vinyl format ever becoming more collectable, label owners are always thinking up ways in order to make their product more appealing and exclusive. Many like the idea of coloured vinyl, though with the reduced amount of polycarbonate comes the higher noise floor level. This is something which a lot of label owners would rather stay clear of. After all, vinyl is the purists choice, so if you look at the format from this angle then decreasing the quality…

Thelem – Haunted Harmonics EP – Artikal Music (artkl013)

Another great release on Artikal Music, vinyl manufacturing handled by Well Tempered. Thelem – Haunted Harmonics EP Release Date: 28th April 2014 Fresh off his stunning Petrichor / Grainform single, Thelem returns to Artikal, delivering his most substantial release thus far. The ‘Haunted Harmonics’ EP splits itself between the grime-influenced ‘Haunted Harmonics’ and cyber-badman riddim of ‘Shottaz’ while stepping up the tempo to 170bpm with ‘Forces of Nature”s agenda of agitation and the clinically paranoid ‘Obsessions’. Haunted Harmonics unfolds like…

Some Truths – Some Friends I Lost To Bedlam, Others I Abandoned There (Mordant Music)

FVS EP – AnD – Samurai Horo

FVS EP – AnD – Samurai Horo

This is a great and very unique looking record.  The 78 sized centre label has been used for this 12″, which is substantially smaller than the standard 12″ label.  The lacquers had to be prepared extra carefully in order  to cater for the surface of the vinyl that isn’t normally visible. The purple colour was mixed with a tiny percentage of white to create that wispy marbled effect.  It comes complete in a paper sleeve with a hand-stamped Japanese Kanji…
